Questions asked to an audience about Earth and Humanity

I made some questions up I thought would be useful in my work and asked them on my tumblr blog to see if I could get any replies from people instead of it just being my opinion.
 These were the questions made:

1.One word you would use to the describe the world we live in now.
2.If you could send any message to intelligent life there is out there about our planet or to future humans, what would you say?
3.What you dislike about the Earth?
4.What you like about the Earth?
5.What thing(s) best represents humans?

More answers asked on Yahoo this time as I felt it would be better to get a few more answers from different websites and kinds of people. Same questions.

Wear Sunscreen

This video isn't really relevant but I remembered seeing it on youtube and liked the style and message put out in the video. Its very personal and makes people feel different things when they see it.It shows different clips of peoples life's and everyday things which I also think is very nice and  effective, maybe something id like to experiment with.

some videos I found

Some videos I found which I thought were quite interesting to look at. They show the different ways people may view life and how it should be lived.
I found them nice to look at and thought they made you think abit more on what humanity is actually about and how we should live showing the key
What if learned about life.

Scenes depicting the law of attraction and about the meaning of humanity

Everything happens for a reason.

Human Emotion

Why do we have emotions? How do they help us?
Evolutionary psychiatrist Randolph Nesse of the University of Michigan thinks that individual emotions are actually adaptations selected by evolution to help us cope with specific situations.
Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions
This diagram demonstrates a selection of major human emotions, how they are related to each other, and how they are different too (or bipolar as he calls the emotions at opposite sides). At the center  there are eight basic emotions such as ecstacy and grief. Each of these is connected to two more subtle emotions that lead to what Plutchik calls the eight advanced emotions –around the outside.

We Feel Fine- Link to website
Since August 2005, We Feel Fine has been harvesting human feelings from a large number of weblogs. Every few minutes, the system searches the world's newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases "I feel" and "I am feeling". When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the "feeling" expressed in that sentence (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.). Because blogs are structured in largely standard ways, the age, gender, and geographical location of the author can often be extracted and saved along with the sentence, as can the local weather conditions at the time the sentence was written. All of this information is saved.

I thought this project was interesting and I really liked the way the website sets out the varieties of emotions which are from all around the world all from 100's of different types of people. It helps people to see the everyday ups and downs in the human life which i think is quite amazing. You can also change the visual looks of the page to different types.

Some examples I print screened when I was on it.

Human Body

What makes humans special and unique to me?

  • Emotions
  • Love
  • Dreams
  • Life and death cycle
http://www.gurusoftware.com/GuruNet/Personal/Factors.htm - A useful website I might look at, it has tables which show various traits which are found in a human being based on human consciousness, personality and character.

Global Warming and Environment.

Some things I found about Global Environment.

" The phrase "conquest of nature" is certainly one of the most
objectionable and misleading expressions of Western languages.
It reflects the illusion that all natural forces can be entirely
controlled, and it expresses the criminal conceit that nature
is to be considered primarily as a source of raw materials
and energy for human purposes."

Things i need to look into about Earth and humanity

Things I need to research into:
Routines
Animals food chains ect
Life cycles
Seasons
Religion
War
Technology- materialism
Icons
Disease
Life & Death
Natural Disasters
Culture
Emotions
Dreams
Love
Environment
Politics
What has been accomplished
Most beautiful things on earth
Our hopes

Media Ideas I would like to think about

1. Cinematic Film.
I found this video which was made to show amazing and beautiful sights of the world. We live in. I love the way the music works with the video and how the short snippets of the film still show so much of the world and our planet around us. The shots as stunning to look at aswell.
I also like the idea of this video where things have been filmed but slowed down in time. Maybe I could use or develop from this idea but instead show more things which are related to our planet and are a bit more shocking to see, natural disasters, war ect.

2. InfoGraphics.

I found this infographic at http://visual.ly/all-about-lighting ( designer unknown). Although it is irrelevant to what i want to be talking about on my 'Earth artefact'. I really like the visual layout of it and how the information is set out on it all keeping to a theme. It combines simple illustrations and typography but still does a really nice job at showing information.

I could use this as development and as an idea of how I may set out my information if needed.

http://visual.ly/do-you-know-whos-watching-you Another design idea I like.

3. Website?
I had an idea of maybe creating a website which people all around the world could post personal pictures and there personal emotions to be read by others. This would show the everyday life of people living on Earth and also the different cultures and beliefs of people. They could all maybe be key pointed on a map?
Here is an example i found of something i think would work well
http://www.wefeelfine.org/wefeelfine_pc.html
I looked at warning signs just incase I decide to stick to the idea of making my artifact more of a warning. I could use them or creat my own designs.

What I want my Golden Record to portray?

These are options I'm going to try explore and consider for my Earth Artifact.

1. Keep it simple and basically explain what planet Earth is and what you would find there but a more updated version.

2.A timeline representing how Earth has came to what it is. Start to present

3.A timeline just showing how the world has changed from 1977 to present with such things leaders, politics and economy ect.

4. Stories of random peoples day and life. Probably in the form of video showing how life varies  This will aim at the emotional side.

5.All the negatives of Earth almost as a warning to others. Warnings not to visit, or warnings to future humans so that they can learn not to get like us. Wars, materialism, conflict, globalization ect.

6.Life & Death. Timeline from born to old age.

7.More personal and emotional with just images and videos from different people around the world.

8.Our mistakes as a human race, our triumphs as a human race and our hopes as a human race. They all work together to help show how earth has grown and developed.

Voyager Golden Records

In 1977 NASA launched two space crafts called the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Aboard them both were phonograph records called the Golden records. They contain a range of different sounds and images which have been chosen to show and portray life and culture on Earth. They are intended for any intelligence from extraterrestrial life form or even future humans who may find them.

A lot of the stuff on the discs are out of date and of no interest now but the content is still key and on the right lines of the message I think I would like to send on the modernised version. I myself don't understand the point of using languages since if found by extraterrestrials how do we even know they speak a language?Even if the discs are found by a future human race, languages may have changed by then. Being the reason I think its best to just stick to images, something which everyone can relate to easier.

The Brief!

. Submit visual and written proposals for a new version of the ‘Golden Record’ entitled  ‘Earth Artifact’.
. It should be a more contemporary version from the previous which should be reflected in the content and the format/media channel of your choice
. Document all stages of research and design process.
.Demonstrate a critical understanding of the design challenge
.Be inventive!
